What we're building
Most museums do not run on one system. They run on a collections database bought a decade ago, a website managed somewhere else entirely, a spreadsheet of members, a ticketing service that takes a cut, a donor tool nobody enjoys using, and a shared drive holding every image the institution has ever digitised. Each of those tools works. None of them know about each other.
museumOS is our answer to that. It is a single platform where the catalog, the public website, the membership list, the donor record, the events calendar and the day-to-day administrative work all sit on the same database. Catalog an object once and it is ready to publish. Sell a ticket and the visitor is already a known contact. Record a gift and it belongs to a relationship, not a spreadsheet row.
Why it's free
Professional museum software has historically been priced for institutions with professional software budgets. The museums that most need a good system — the county historical society, the single-subject museum, the university collection run by two people and a rotating cast of volunteers — are usually the ones priced out of it.
We think that is the wrong shape for this field. museumOS is free for museums because we would rather it be used than metered.
